Guild of St Stephen: Our International Altar Servers' Guild

We have vacancies for Altar Servers and are recruiting at the moment.  To be an Altar Server is a responsible and honourable ministry in the Church - something done to serve Jesus and our brothers and sisters.  It is probably the first ministry that a person can take up in his or her life as young people in Year 4 at Junior School, who have made First Holy Communion and who are able to come to Sunday Mass regularly are eligable.  But it is not just for children.  Our Guild of St Stephen has members who have been serving for up to 50 years and we have a healthy number of young men and women in their late teens and early twenties.  At the moment we are looking for:

  • Boys and Girls in Year 4 and upwards, either at Catholic or Local Authority schools - and this includes secondary school.
  • Adults who might like to encourage their children to become servers by becoming servers themselves.  This is a bit of a departure from the way things have been in the past but we need to emphasise that this ministry is open to any qualified lay person and that the qualification is that one wants to serve Jesus in this special and intimate way.  Adults need not feel embarrassed that they will be trained with childen as we will make special arrangements with them.  Men and women are equally welcome.  This ministry is now an example of the equal opportunities offered by the Church and it seems a shame that we do not have, particularly, more mature ladies who are serving on the Altar.

Please contact Mr Patrick Pritchard (President of Guild) or  Bernadette Cook (Senior Lady Server) via the contact information for the presbytery - by contact response e-mail or by telephoning between 09.30 and 12.00 Mondays to Fridays.
